The project focuses on two main areas: providing support to children with dyslexia and offering specialized training to teachers. Recognizing the unique challenges faced by children with dyslexia, the Rotary Club of Barbados West and the Caribbean Dyslexia Association and Centre have come together to offer a range of resources and interventions.
To support children with dyslexia, the project includes the establishment of individualized support at the centre, which is equipped with specialized tools and technologies. The centre provides a safe and nurturing environment where children with demonstrated difficulties in reading are first assessed using the Dyslexia Screening Test. Students who are most in financial need then receive personalized tutoring, access assistive technologies, and engage in activities designed to enhance their learning experience. An Individual Education Plan (IEP) is developed to tailor interventions to meet the specific needs of each child. As such, the project aims to help them overcome challenges, build confidence, and reach their full potential.
In addition to supporting children, the project also recognizes the importance of equipping teachers with the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively address dyslexia in the classroom. To achieve this, the Rotary Club of Barbados West partnered with the Caribbean Dyslexia Association and Centre to provide a comprehensive training program for four (4) identified teachers. The coursework covers topics such as dyslexia awareness, identification and assessment, instructional strategies, and the use of assistive technologies. The course is accredited by the Open College Network, U.K. Certification on completion of the full course will be forwarded to candidates via the Caribbean Dyslexia Association and Centre. By enhancing teachers’ understanding of dyslexia and equipping them with evidence-based strategies, the project aims to create a more inclusive and supportive learning environment for students at the selected schools.
Through their joint efforts, the Rotary Club of Barbados West and the Caribbean Dyslexia Association are making a significant impact on the lives of children with dyslexia and the educators who support them. By providing resources, training, and support, we are fostering a more inclusive education system where every child has the opportunity to thrive. This collaboration exemplifies the commitment of both organizations to making a positive difference in the lives of children with dyslexia and creating a brighter future for all.
